5 common skincare myths – busted.

5 common skincare myths – busted.

Thanks to the internet and social media, everyone’s a beauty expert.

While there is a lot of helpful information out there, there are also plenty of skincare myths that needs to be busted.

Today, we'll discuss the 5 most common myths you need to stop believing, pronto

1. "You don't need a moisturiser if you've got oily skin."

We understand that those with oily skin fight the constant battle of reducing the appearance of shine and oil. But, that doesn't mean you should skimp on moisturiser! The oils on our faces does not provide moisturiser, it only helps lock it in. Sometimes, your skin may be oily because you skipped moisturiser, and skin overproduces oil to compensate for the lack of moisture.

Moisturiser is a yes, for ALL skin types!

2. "Your don't need to wear sunscreen if you're staying at home."

When at home, the standard glass windows block UVB rays but NOT UVA rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin than UVB rays and they are the main contributing factor to photo-aging, which are signs such as dark spots, wrinkles, and leathery textured skin.

Sunscreen is that one step you should NEVER skip everyday!

3. "That squeaky clean tight feeling after cleansing means clean skin."

If your skin feels tight after washing, it's a sign that your cleanser may be too harsh and has stripped off the moisture and nutrients it needs. Also known as over-cleansing, it can damage your skin's lipid barrier and cause your skin to breakout as it produces excess oil to make up for the moisture loss.

Your cleanser should be gentle yet effective, so that it does not strip away your natural moisture barrier.

4. "You only need anti-aging products when you're older."

Prevention is truly better than cure. We're aging everyday and our skin produces 1% less collagen every year. As the skin becomes less elastic and thinner, it leads to the appearance of signs of aging like wrinkles or fine lines. Don't wait till your collagen production slows down before you start taking care of your aging skin; you’ll find it much more difficult to repair what has been lost.

There is no right age to start anti-aging, just start now.

5. "The more expensive the product, the better."

Sure, expensive products will probably feel like a dream and smell lovely, but the effect they have compared with a cheaper alternative is fairly similar. From a functional standpoint, both expensive and affordable moisturisers use the same class of ingredients.

Just because it’s more expensive, doesn’t mean it’s better.
