Are chemical or physical exfoliators better?
There are 2 types of exfoliators, chemical and physical ones. Although both refer to the sloughing away of dead skin cells from the skin’s surface, and helps with a speedy cell turnover, smoother surface, clearer complexion and brighter skin, they function a little differently from each other.
What is the difference between chemical and physical exfoliators?
Chemical exfoliation is formulated using acids or enzymes such as salicylic acid that dissolves dead skin cells by loosening the bonds that hold the cells together, allowing it to be removed easily when applied. They are usually in the form of alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs).
Physical exfoliation on the other hand, manually removes dead skin cells and sloughs away the nasties on the top layer of your skin, revealing a softer, newer and fresher skin underneath.
Which is better?
For chemical exfoliation, AHAs like glycolic acid can help exfoliate the skin for a brighter and even skin tone, whereas BHAs target more on going deep into pores to dissolve sebum and dirt, which is effective in fighting against acne. However, chemical exfoliators are more likely to cause irritation especially individuals with extremely sensitive skin. These acids may come on too strongly for some skin types and aggravate red, inflamed skin more easily. In addition, AHAs are also known to increase the skin’s sensitivity towards the sun, which can lead to sunburns and irritation more quickly.
For physical exfoliators, they help improve skin texture more and target a smoother appearance in terms of reducing fine lines and wrinkles overtime. Physical exfoliation can also help to stimulate collagen production, giving rise to more elastic, smooth, and soft skin. In many physical exfoliators in the market, they may contain abrasives such as seeds and beads that are marketed to better buff away this layer. However, it is important to note that harsh particles present in the formula can cause micro tears in skin, causing damage to your skin barrier.
Physical exfoliators, when selected carefully, can offer greater skin benefits as compared to a chemical one, without the harsh side effects of increased skin sensitivity and inflammation. Always opt for gentler formulation when selecting physical exfoliators, and ensure that it contains no rough textures that can damage your skin.
