What are adaptogens?

Adaptogens are plant substances - often herbs - that have been found to help our bodies manage stress and maintain balance, or homeostasis. They are called adaptogens because they adapt to what the body needs. Known for their powerful and efficacious properties, adaptogens are used in many areas of wellness and in traditional medicine.

Beyond wellness and medicine, adaptogens also provide significant benefits to the skin.

The best adaptogens for your skin

  1. Chaga mushroom

This mushroom has been sought after for many years but has recently been trending in skin care creams. It is believed to have anti-bacterial, anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. One study even found that the chaga mushroom could provide cellular protection against DNA damage.

2. Reishi mushroom

Just like the chaga mushroom, the reishi mushroom has also been trending in skincare recently. The mushroom has been used in many skincare products due to its ability to smooth, detoxify and protect the skin. This is because it is said to have antiallergic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. There have also been studies that show that the reishi mushroom possesses a calming nature as it can help with the quick regression of skin lesions after being applied on top of irritated skin.

3. Goji berries

The Goji berry has been a Chinese staple in both food and medicine. Research has found that the oil from goji seeds may improve the skin barrier and prevent water loss. It may also help to increase collagen production and cell viability to aid in wound healing.

Sigi Skin’s Youth Beam Anti-ageing Night Serum has both the chaga and reishi mushroom in its formula and Sigi Skin’s Bright Skies Peeling Gel has goji berries in its formula.
