Ingredient Spotlight: Grape Seed Extract

We've all heard of the saying "aging like a fine wine", which ideally is what we're all aiming for, yes? We also know that wine in moderation has amazing benefits for the body. What we might not know is: various parts of the grapevine and the byproducts of winemaking gifts us with unique ingredients for medicinal and cosmetic purposes.

The advantages one can reap for their skin from grapes and wines are not often highlighted (as they should be!). Now, ingredients like grape seeds are more coveted than ever as we discover how its extracts does wonders and should be added into our skincare.

So, what exactly are grape seed extracts, and what can they do for your skin?

Prevents Oxidation

According to a 2015 study in the Global Journal of Health Science, grape seed extracts has 20 times the antioxidant content of vitamin E and 50 times of vitamin C. Vitamin E is a nutrient that concentrates in the membranes of skin cells and helps hold onto moisture.

Discovered in 1986 by Professor Masqueller, grape seeds have an intense free radical scavenging effect. The antioxidants, with notable effects of repairing cells from the inside out, may improve skin's texture and reduce signs of ageing.

Protection from sun damage

Grape seed extracts are known to cure wrinkles and pigment variations, and even prevent skin cancer. In a published journal by Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, it was concluded that grape seed extracts "could be useful in the attenuation of the adverse UV-induced health effects in human skin.".

The antioxidants within help to fight free radicals, which are developed from sun damage and pollution to stress—all three factors that are increasingly prominent in this day and age.

Healing and Calming

All thanks to the alpha hydroxyl acid, grape seed extracts helps enhance the wound healing abilities of cells and minimise scarring.

Containing proanthocyanidins, it also has powerful healing and anti-inflammatory properties. Meanwhile, the flavonoids in the extract prevent allergic reactions on the skin. All of which can provide relief from skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema.

Naturally, the collagen and elastin in your skin work to keep it healthy, and grape seed extracts amplify that.

Improves your skin

Based on a small trial at the St. Helena Institute for Plastic Surgery, subjects showed a 88% improvement in skin texture after using a product with grape seed extracts for 6 weeks.

The extracts also have mild astringent qualities, which is why it's used in anti-ageing cosmetic formulations. Being non-comedogenic (yay to no blocked pores!), it's usually used in products that target oily, acne-prone skin.

With grape seed, your skin's hydration and elasticity can be improved towards smoother, healthier skin! This anti-ageing ingredient accelerates cell turnover and collagen production. When used appropriately and consistently, it can even out skin tones and treat acne outbreaks too.
