Is your skin peeling during pregnancy?

To all mothers-to-be, congratulations on the upcoming arrival of your bundle of joy!

However, if you are currently experiencing dry skin and peeling, don’t panic!

Having dry skin and peeling around the whole body is completely normal, even though some mothers do not experience it.

Why does it occur?

  • Hormonal fluctuations - extreme fluctuations in hormone levels will weaken the hydrolipidic barrier of your skin, causing an increased rate of water and moisture loss.

  • Eczema and atopic conditionsIf you suffer from eczema and atopic conditions even before pregnancy, this can be a contributing factor to dry and peeling skin.

  • Increased blood volume - Because of the need to supply more oxygen to your foetus, blood volume will increase, hence requiring more intake of water. An insufficient intake of fluids will also cause your skin to become dry.

  • Compromised skin barrier - As your baby grows, your skin stretches around the belly area, causing a compromised skin barrier that is unable to fully protect your skin from the nasties of the air, and also allows for more rapid transepidermal water loss, hence the dry and peeling skin.

What should you do?

Some ingredients to look out for would be

  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Niacinamide
  • Glycerin
  • Ceramides

These ingredients help to lock in the moisture in your skin and prevent it from escaping or drying out. By incorporating these clinically active ingredients in your skincare, you will be able to see how hydrated your skin is due to a repair in the skin barrier!

Additionally, try opting for a physical sunscreen instead of a chemical one to protect your skin from sun damage and dryness. The difference between a physical sunscreen and a chemical sunscreen is that a physical one forms a thin undisruptive layer on the surface of your skin to effectively deflect harmful UV rays, whereas chemical sunscreens get absorbed in your bloodstream.

Since your little baby needs only the best, we would always recommend pregnant mommies to opt for a physical sunscreen instead!

Lastly, it is important to keep hydrating yourself by drinking lots of water!
