Sources of UV harm that you may not be aware of
If you thought that the sun is the only source of UV harm, you’re SO wrong. Today we’re going to talk about other sources of UV rays that you may not be aware of - and of course, highlight the importance of sunscreen in these situations.
1 - Snow
The next time you vacation in winter wonderland or go on a ski trip, remember this - snow reflects around 80% of UV radiation, 90% on a sunny day. This means that you are actually exposed to double UV radiation, both from the sun and from the snow’s reflection. It may sound counterintuitive because you’re in a cold environment - but that does not mean UV rays aren’t doing their mischief.
2 - The beach and the ocean
Here are some more crazy statistics according to the World Health Organisation - dry beach sand reflects about 15% of UV radiation, and sea foam reflects around 25%! What’s more, UV rays also penetrate into the ocean water, harming the underwater ecosystems and you, the happy beach babe taking a dip in the waves.
3 - Nail lamps
Did it ever occur to you that the UV lamps used to create beautiful manicures are also a source of radiation? While the exposure is low, you may still want to protect your delicate fingers. This is why many nail salons nowadays have started to offer customers UV-protectant gloves during their manicure sessions. But don’t fret if your nail tech hasn’t gotten their hands on this new gadget yet - simply rub on a nice layer of sunscreen before you stick your fingers under the nail lamp!
