What does SPF mean?

SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, is a crucial metric in the realm of sun care. This acronym represents a numerical measurement that illuminates the duration your skin can endure sun exposure with sunscreen as opposed to without it. To illustrate, if your skin usually starts to burn after ten minutes in the sun, employing an SPF 15 sunscreen would extend that threshold to fifteen times, granting you protection for 150 minutes.


In essence, the numerical value of SPF serves as a multiplier, offering insights into the extended defence against harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. The higher the SPF, the more robust the shield provided by the sunscreen against the potential onset of sunburn.


While the SPF value on a sunscreen is crucial, it's essential to recognize that it's not the sole factor to consider when selecting the right sunscreen for your needs. The sun emits two types of UV rays: UVA and UVB. UVA rays are linked to premature ageing, and UVB rays are associated with sunburn. However, both types of rays have the potential to inflict skin damage, ultimately increasing the risk of skin cancer.


Therefore, a comprehensive sunscreen should offer broad-spectrum protection, effectively shielding the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. This ensures a more complete defence against the spectrum of potential sun-induced skin issues, ranging from premature ageing to the more serious threat of skin cancer.
