What to know about eczema

Eczema: also known as atopic dermatitis, it is a skin condition where patches of skin become inflamed, itchy, cracked, and rough.

There is no known cure for eczema, you can only control it.

You may need to try various treatments over months or years to control it. And even if treatment is successful, signs and symptoms may return, also known as a "flare- up".

Triggers can include

  • Certain food allergies
  • Cold weather and dry air
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Airborne allergens
    • dust mites
    • pollen
    • pet dander
    • mold
  • Perspiration
  • Hormonal changes

What to do

1. Avoid scratching!

This can cause broken skin and may start to bleed – which can result in an infection. Instead, giving it a cool compress with a cold, wet washcloth or even an ice pack, can help relief itch.

2. Try to identify your triggers

This may tricky, but peanuts, milk, soy, wheat, fish, and eggs are the most common culprits. It might also been a new skincare, body soap, or laundry detergent you are trying out. Try to also keep your environment free of allergies, by vacuuming and changing your bedding once a week.

Invest in a dehumidifier or air purifier if necessary!

3. Reduce stress

When you’re stressed, your body’s stress hormones can cause inflammation that irritates your skin. Try out relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, and deep breathing to ease tension.

4. Moisturise within 3 minutes after showering

This helps to lock in moisture into the skin and prevents water loss. Use a barrier-repairing moisturiser to help heal sensitised and compromised skin.
