Why are physical sunscreens more suitable for eczema skin

You apply sunscreen everyday (we hope), but did you know that there are 2 different types of formulas? Have you ever questioned which one you should opt for, especially if you have eczema? Let us explain!

The main difference between physical sunscreens and chemical ones lies in the way it works and how it protects your skin. Chemical sunscreens, when applied, get absorbed into your bloodstream. Which then absorbs harmful UV rays and convert them into heat, before expelling this converted heat from the body. These sunscreens can include ingredients such as octinoxate and oxybenzone. When using a chemical sunscreen, it is recommended to apply 15-20 minutes before actually heading out as that is the amount of time taken for absorption and for it to fully start protecting you against UV rays. Chemical sunscreens also raise the chance of your skin becoming more sensitive, which can include symptoms like irritation, stinging and burning sensations. The higher the SPF for a chemical sunscreen, the higher risk of irritation, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Physical sunscreens on the other hand, sit and form an invisible layer on the outermost layer of your skin that filters out harmful UVA and UVB rays. They do not get absorbed into your bloodstream, and take effect immediately when applied, without having to wait. Physical sunscreens also contain gentler ingredients that are sensitive skin friendly, such as zinc oxide which has lower chances of causing an allergic reaction or increased skin sensitivity. Physical sunscreens are also pregnancy, nursing and kids safe since it is a physical barrier!

If you are experiencing eczema, we always recommend to go for a physical sunscreen instead to prevent flareup triggers from chemicals that can also increase risk of further inflammation. Even better, opt for a sunscreen that has an addition of hyaluronic acid and ceramides, which can help soothe red, irritated skin. This hydrating factor can also help prevent itchiness, dryness, and flakiness, which makes it a best friend and an absolute must have for eczema!
